Open Letter
to the Best Driver
on Route 88

Dear Heroic Driver,

Firstly.

Thank you for updating your sound system to modern decibel levels so that I, a fellow motorist with windows rolled up, am still able to feel the shockwave, and hear the kick of your favorite trap beats over my news radio.

They are fire indeed.

Secondly.

Your creative lane usage alerted me to the importance of bodily safety. Specifically, that my seat belt should be securely fastened at all times. And, upon inspection, it was. As were the seat belts of the two child car seats in back. A glorious day.

Thirdly.

Your close presence in the rear view mirror was critical to the success of my travels. For it helped me confirm that I was indeed in the far right lane when I needed to be.

And, as such, my speed, approximate to the flow of traffic, yet a forgivable indiscretion over the legally posted limit, was perhaps not adequate for all other motorists. Though I do admit my stubborn tendency to reduce pace as I approach my exit.

Or dare I say, OUR exit! What luck!

For you, a proven leader, had accepted command of the space cushion, which I left available for that exact purpose- With hope that you might execute a swift entry betwixt a semi and an unsuspecting Elantra.

By narrowly averting the crisis you introduced, you have impressed upon your admirers the true depth of your skill. A lessor driver would have succumbed to the use of a signal.

Lastly.

It is with great humility I defer to your values. They were an insightful lesson for my young boys who journeyed with me.

Prior to your overtaking, I had resigned myself to training them in lessor ideals, such as checking one’s blind spot, and common courtesy.

But now I know, nay, all of us on Route 88 know, that a greater impetus in life outweighs these misconceptions. For it was masterfully demonstrated by your arrival at the stop light.

Twelve seconds sooner than I.

Thank You.

With Gratitude,

-The bad driver in the worse car.

P.S.

I look forward to our future engagement upon conclusion of your discussions with the police officer.
